Experience Unmatched Luxury & Serenity: Escape to Private Pinang Island for Just $1,000/Night!
When Richard Kvech and his friends first visited Pinang Island off the coast of Sumatra, it was a near-untouched paradise with only an old fishermen’s bungalow marking human presence. Together with Tomas Ouhel, Stephan Kotas, and Martin Mrazek, they envisioned and built an eco-resort that harmonizes with the natural beauty of the 50-hectare island. Their eco-retreat project, launched after they secured a 50-year lease, includes accommodations constructed from local materials like coconut wood and driftwood, with minimal impact on the island’s pristine environment.
The resort, which started hosting guests two years ago, offers simple, nature-immersive lodging for up to 12 occupants. Activities include yoga, surfing, and permaculture gardening. Kvech emphasizes the resort’s appeal to those seeking a remote and nature-centric experience rather than luxury. Despite its allure, reaching Pinang is challenging. Travelers must navigate multiple flights and a final treacherous boat trip to the island.
In August 2023, a tragic incident highlighted the journey’s risks when a boat carrying surfers capsized in a storm, leading to a fatality. This prompted the resort to enhance maritime safety measures and revise its transportation strategy. The establishment of the Fifan Foundation seeks to improve safety training for local sea captains, reflecting the group’s commitment to community collaboration and responsible tourism.
Kvech, who splits his time between Pinang and the Czech Republic, acknowledges the challenges of maintaining the project but takes pride in the satisfaction it brings to guests who travel far to experience its unique offerings. The island employs 12 locals and caters to adventurous souls drawn to its natural setting and quiet charm, thereby balancing an intimate ambiance with essential comforts.
