Tragic Loss: Israeli Soldier Killed in Intense Clash with Hezbollah – Live Updates from the Israel-Hezbollah War
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged Hezbollah leader Syyed Hassan Nasrallah to flee Lebanon just days before Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli strike, according to three Iranian sources. Khamenei acted on intelligence reports indicating Israeli infiltration within Hezbollah, suggesting they planned to assassinate Nasrallah.
After the attack on Hezbollah’s booby-trapped pagers on September 17, Khamenei sent a message through an envoy, urging Nasrallah to seek refuge in Iran. The warning was conveyed by Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, a senior commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, who was with Nasrallah in the bunker when Israeli bombs struck. Nilforoushan was also killed in the attack.
The incident highlights growing concerns in Tehran about Israeli infiltration of senior government and military ranks. The sources also pointed to the July killing of Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanon. However, Israel has not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh’s death.
The loss of Nasrallah, a key figure in the anti-Israel axis, represents a significant blow to Iran and its allies, eliciting deep worry among Iranian leadership about the extent of Israeli espionage within their ranks and their allied groups.
This move by Israel is seen as part of its broader strategy to weaken Iranian influence and capabilities in the region, particularly targeting figures and organizations perceived as threats. The incident underscores the high-stakes espionage and covert operations that continue to shape the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.
