Urgent EU Demands YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok Reveal Content Algorithms | Explosive Tech News
EU Commission Probes YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok Algorithms
Last Updated: Oct 02, 2024 | 11:07 PM IST
The EU Commission has launched an inquiry into YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok regarding the parameters their algorithms use to recommend content, probing the role these systems play in amplifying systemic risks. These risks encompass areas such as the electoral process, mental health, and minors’ protection.
The investigation, conducted under the Digital Services Act (DSA), also addresses the platforms’ efforts to mitigate the spread of illegal content, including illegal drugs and hate speech. Specifically, TikTok has been asked to provide details on measures it employs to prevent manipulation by bad actors and to mitigate risks related to elections and civic discourse.
The platforms are required to respond by November 15. Following the submissions, the EU will determine subsequent steps, potentially including fines for non-compliance.
This inquiry aligns with previous EU actions under the DSA, which mandates stricter controls on illegal and harmful content on platforms. Non-compliance proceedings have been initiated against other tech giants, including Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, AliExpress, and TikTok, for similar issues.
