Outrage Erupts: Heartbreaking Protest Over Remand Prisoner’s Death in Tiruchi Amidst Police Denial of Torture Claims
Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest at Mutharasanallur on Wednesday, demanding a second post-mortem for Dravida Mani, a remand prisoner who died on September 28. Led by district secretary R. Raja, the protesters alleged that Mani was tortured to death and called for a thorough investigation. They also accused the police of pressuring the deceased’s family to accept the body, which is currently at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital.
A petition for a second post-mortem has been filed with the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, following claims from Mani’s family that he was a victim of custodial death. Earlier, CPM members protested outside the District Collectorate on Monday, and opposition leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami voiced concerns on social media, suggesting possible custodial torture. Nam Tamilar Katchi’s Seeman also condemned the police’s actions.
In response, the Tiruchi district police released a statement denying any custodial torture. They reported that Dravida Mani was arrested on September 26 for illegal liquor transportation and was in Central Prison after a medical test. He developed health issues on September 28 and died at MGMGH. The police insisted that all legal procedures are being followed, including an inquiry by the Judicial Magistrate, a post-mortem conducted by a team of doctors, and a videotaping of the post-mortem. The ongoing investigation will proceed based on the post-mortem report and the Judicial Magistrate’s findings.
