Urgent Plea: Heartbreaking River Erosion Ravages Kokrajhar Village, Residents Desperately Seek Government Action
Nawarbita, a village in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, has been grappling with severe annual erosion caused by the Longa River, which flows downstream from Bhutan. This persistent erosion has displaced 70 to 80 families and swallowed thousands of hectares of land, drastically changing the village landscape.
Local infrastructure has also suffered significantly, with Nawarbita LP School and several mosques being uprooted by the relentless erosion. In an attempt to address the issue, the Assam Water Resources Department approved a project valued at Rs 150.79 lakhs aimed at protecting the village. However, residents argue that these efforts have been largely ineffective.
A villager voiced a heartfelt plea: “We urge the Assam government to protect our homes, mosques, and educational institutions. This longstanding issue has plagued us for years. The condition of the communication roads is also dire. Nawarbita is an ancient village, and nearly 70 houses have been engulfed by the river. We need immediate and effective measures.”
Another resident echoed this frustration: “The government sanctioned Rs 150.79 lakhs for the project, but the implementation has not been effective in protecting our village. We call upon the government to step up and ensure that meaningful action is taken.”
The situation in Nawarbita underscores the pressing need for comprehensive measures to combat river erosion and safeguard the livelihoods of affected communities. As the village continues to lose land and infrastructure to the Longa River, residents remain hopeful for more robust government intervention to address this ongoing crisis.
