Celebrate Assam’s Rich Heritage: 8 Unique GI-Tagged Products That Inspire Cultural Pride
In a significant acknowledgment of Assam’s rich cultural heritage, the Geographical Indications (GI) Registry in Chennai has awarded GI tags to eight unique products from the state. This move not only highlights Assam’s cultural diversity but also reinforces the preservation of traditional knowledge and the heritage of indigenous tribes, particularly the Bodo community.
Among the newly recognized items are three varieties of traditional rice beer, applied for by the Bodo Traditional Brewers Association. Leading the trio is ‘Bodo Jou Gwran,’ a potent rice beer with an impressive alcohol content of 16.11%, making it one of Assam’s strongest brews. ‘Maibra Jou Bidwi,’ a cherished welcome drink in Bodo homes, and ‘Bodo Jou Gishi,’ a beverage with mythological and medicinal significance, also received GI tags, showcasing the community’s storied brewing traditions.
The GI recognition extends to four food products, including ‘Bodo Napham,’ a fermented fish dish prepared through meticulous anaerobic fermentation over several months. This technique, developed to cope with the region’s frequent rains and fishing cycles, underscores the ingenuity of Bodo preservation methods. ‘Bodo Ondla,’ a rice powder-based curry, ‘Bodo Gwkha,’ traditionally cooked during the Bwisagu festival, and ‘Bodo Narzi,’ a semi-fermented jute leaf dish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and vital nutrients, have also been honored.
Additionally, the ‘Bodo Aronai,’ a finely woven traditional cloth, has been recognized. Typically draped over the shoulder, this fabric reflects the Bodo people’s close ties to nature, with designs inspired by elements such as trees, flowers, birds, and mountains.
These GI tags validate the unique cultural expressions of Assam and acknowledge the Bodo community’s deep-rooted traditions. This milestone highlights the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge and ensures that these cultural treasures remain integral to Assam’s diverse cultural tapestry.
