Guwahati: Manipur Conflict Intensifies with Misinformation, Warns Army Chief
New Delhi: The ongoing conflict in Manipur has escalated into a battleground of narratives, according to Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi. Speaking at the Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2024 in New Delhi, organized by the Indian Army and the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS), General Dwivedi emphasized the damaging impact of misinformation on the situation in Manipur.
The conflict, which began in May 2023, spiraled from a rumor about the burning of an Anglo-Kuki war centenary gate, later proven false. General Dwivedi underlined that this initial rumor catalyzed widespread violence, which the region is still struggling to stabilize. He stressed that the distortion of realities through narrative battles, particularly false claims of drone bombings and the infiltration of 900 anti-national elements, is exacerbating the situation.
“Upon investigation, we found no evidence of drone bombings or mass infiltration,” General Dwivedi stated. “Controlling these false narratives is crucial for restoring stability.”
