Unleashing Potential: How 30 New Entrepreneurship Centres are Transforming Northeast India’s Economy
The Indian government has inaugurated 30 Entrepreneurship Development Centers (EDCs) in Northeast India, aiming to foster economic growth and create a self-sustaining entrepreneurial ecosystem. The announcement was made during the “Northeast Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Conclave 2024” at IIM Shillong, emphasizing the empowerment of the region’s youth.
Jayant Chaudhary, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, highlighted the impressive double-digit growth across all eight Northeastern states. He credited the “Act Fast for North East and Act First for North East” policy as a critical factor behind this progress.
The initiative integrates infrastructure development with essential soft interventions, such as entrepreneurship awareness programs, faculty development sessions, and innovation competitions. The ambitious project aims to establish 900 startups throughout the region.
State ministers from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram also participated in the conclave, focusing on strategies to leverage the youth’s potential. They underscored the need to upgrade Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and preserve traditional crafts in line with market demands.
Additionally, the scheme includes training for 600 mentors and the establishment of adequate infrastructure within higher educational institutions. Fifty incubatees will receive seed grants of Rs 5 lakhs each to support their business ventures.
Under the broader Skill India Mission, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has heavily invested in the region. Since 2015, the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana has trained over 13.40 lakh candidates, with Rs 857.84 crore allocated specifically to Northeastern states.
Other notable initiatives include the Jan Shikshan Sansthan program, which has skilled 1.24 lakh candidates since 2018, and the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, engaging over 43,000 apprentices.
The inauguration of these EDCs marks a strategic and significant step towards enhancing the economic landscape of Northeast India by creating a robust entrepreneurial framework and empowering the region’s young talent.
