Soil Dumping Raises Environmental Concerns in Law Syiem
SHILLONG, Sep 29: The indiscriminate dumping of soil inside Law Syiem, near the road junction leading to SAN-KER in Mawlai Mawroh, has sparked significant concern among locals. Residents and passersby have voiced their distress over the ecological damage caused to the pine trees in the area.
Eyewitnesses report that large trucks have been depositing soil, severely disrupting the forest landscape. "It is really painful to see huge trucks dumping soil inside Law Syiem. The dumping has destroyed the forest area, especially the pine trees," lamented a few concerned residents.
The soil being dumped reportedly originates from the land owned by the Syiem of Mylliem, Ainam Sing Syiem, in Umshing-Mawkynroh. According to sources, the Syiem does not require any special permission for such activities as the site falls under Hima Mylliem jurisdiction.
Efforts to reach the Syiem of Mylliem for a comment on the situation have so far been unsuccessful.
In response to the growing unease, KHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pynshngain N. Syiem stated that no official complaints have been lodged regarding the soil dumping. However, he assured that prompt action would be taken upon receiving formal complaints. "We will take action if we receive an official complaint," the Deputy CEM confirmed.
The issue highlights the ongoing conflict between development and environmental conservation. As calls for regulatory measures grow louder, the local community is urging authorities to take immediate steps to safeguard the natural integrity of Law Syiem.
The situation remains dynamic, with residents watching closely for any further developments.
