By Denis Giles, September 30, 2024
Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 29: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands joined the global observance of World Rabies Day on September 28, 2024, through a series of impactful awareness campaigns conducted by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS). The territory, which is currently rabies-free, leveraged this opportunity to underscore the critical nature of rabies prevention.
Rabies, a fatal viral disease transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, most commonly dogs, can be effectively prevented through vaccination. Pet owners were reminded of their responsibility to ensure their pets receive timely vaccinations.
The main event was held at the Veterinary Hospital in Junglighat, featuring key speakers including Dr. K. A. Naveen, Director of AH&VS, and Dr. K. Mohammed, Senior Veterinary Officer (SVO) at the hospital. The event featured a comprehensive awareness program and a vaccination drive for pets.
Through these efforts, the Department aims to maintain the rabies-free status of the A&N Islands and educate the public on the importance of ongoing vigilance and preventive measures.
