Unbreakable Heart: Follow the Proven ‘ABCD’ Formula this World Heart Day, Experts Urge
Experts at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) stressed the “A, B, C, D” approach to heart health during a Saturday event preceding World Heart Day. Highlighting the method, Dr. Akshay Pradhan, head of cardiology at KGMU, outlined its components: avoiding alcohol (A), controlling blood pressure (B), managing cholesterol levels and avoiding cigarettes (C), controlling diabetes (D), and exercising (E). According to Dr. Pradhan, adhering to these principles can cut the risk of heart disease by at least 50%.
In a complementary lecture, Dr. Rishi Sethi underscored the importance of prompt medical treatment for heart conditions. He emphasized that timely intervention can significantly enhance recovery rates and minimize damage to the heart during medical emergencies. “Recognizing heart ailment symptoms and seeking immediate treatment should be paramount,” he added.
Moreover, the Command Hospital at Central Command hosted a patient awareness program focusing on heart health. The event featured a lecture titled “Heart Disease in 2024: Myths and Realities” and a “Run for Fun” activity aimed at promoting physical exercise and heart health.
Dr. Nakul Sinha, chairman of cardiology at Max Super Specialty Hospital, pointed out the shifting landscape of heart disease demographics. He noted that advancements in detection and diagnosis have revealed that heart diseases, particularly coronary artery disease, are no longer confined to the elderly but now affect younger populations, including adolescents and young adults. To mark World Heart Day, Max Super Specialty Hospital organized a ‘Heart Health Fair,’ which offered a variety of engaging activities and expert-led lectures on rising cardiac issues.
State capital hospitals conducted numerous events to commemorate World Heart Day. At Medanta Super Specialty Hospital, the spotlight was on a Heart Health and CPR workshop aimed at school students, with the goal of grooming them as heart health ambassadors.
These initiatives underscore a collective effort to raise awareness about heart health and the measures individuals can take to prevent heart disease, affirming the continuing importance of education and proactive health management.
