Spike in Dengue and Malaria Cases in Lucknow Amidst Continued Preventative Efforts
In the past 24 hours, Lucknow has reported 39 new dengue cases and 3 new malaria cases, bringing the total to 837 cases since January. This tally includes 429 dengue and 408 malaria cases, according to data from the chief medical officer (CMO) shared on Saturday.
Despite the rise in cases, the CMO clarified that a 71-year-old woman, who passed away recently, did not die due to dengue. The health department stated she succumbed to acute kidney injury, severe metabolic acidosis, and cardiac pulmonary arrest.
CMO teams have been actively inspecting mosquito breeding hotspots, screening localities, and spraying insecticide to curb mosquito proliferation. No new deaths related to these diseases have been reported in the state capital since Friday. On September 28, CMO teams visited 1,160 homes, discovering mosquito breeding conditions in six households. They are also educating residents on preventive measures.
New dengue cases emerged from areas including Aliganj, Chander Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, NK Road, Indiranagar, Chinhat, Tudiyiaganj, Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT), and Aishbagh. Fresh malaria cases surfaced in Aliganj, BKT, and Chander Nagar.
The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), in collaboration with the health department, continues to conduct intensive campaigns in areas such as Ganeshganj, Faizullaganj, Alamnagar, and Arjunganj to prevent disease spread. This includes cleaning areas, spraying anti-larvae chemicals, and fogging.
Government hospitals have designated special wards for dengue and malaria patients. Lok Bandhu Shri Raj Narayan Combined Hospital has 18 reserved beds, Balrampur Hospital has 12, and Civil Hospital has 22. King George’s Medical University and Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences have each set aside over 30 beds.
Hospital officials, including Dr. Suresh Kaushal of Lok Bandhu Hospital, have noted an increase in fever cases and anticipate bed occupancy to rise within two weeks. Dr. Ritu Srivastava advises the public to wear full-sleeved clothes, cover and clean water containers regularly, change cooler water weekly, and use mosquito nets for sleeping.
