Explosive Warning: Shehbaz Sharif’s Fiery Threat of ‘Decisive Response’ Escalates Kashmir Tensions
United Nations, Sep 27: At the General Assembly on Friday, Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif delivered a provocative speech, alleging that India has plans for a limited war under its nuclear doctrine to seize more of the disputed Kashmir region. Sharif warned that Pakistan would respond decisively to any such Indian action, although his claims appear unfounded.
Sharif’s speech took a menacing tone, referencing past conflicts between India and Pakistan, and accused India of rejecting peace proposals. He stated that Pakistan’s participation in dialogue hinges on India reversing the changes made to Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 in August 2019. India insists that talks can only proceed if Pakistan ceases its support for terrorism.
Sharif called for India to undo its "unilateral and illegal measures" and engage in peaceful negotiations as per UN Security resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiris. However, the 1948 Security Council Resolution 47 requires Pakistan to first withdraw its troops and infiltrators from Jammu and Kashmir and to stop arming terrorists, conditions Pakistan continues to overlook.
Finding isolated in his pursuit to internationalize the Kashmir issue, Sharif attempted to draw parallels between Kashmir and Palestine, claiming both peoples have long struggled for self-determination. He criticized what he termed as Hindu supremacist agenda in India, alleging it stokes Islamophobia and aims to subjugate Indian Muslims.
Sharif also condemned human rights violations in Kashmir and accused India of deploying 90,000 troops there to oppress the local population. The Pakistani Prime Minister’s rhetoric juxtaposed his nation’s ongoing export of terror, presenting Pakistan as a victim of terrorism, citing groups like ISIL-K, al-Qaeda, and TTP.
Despite Sharif’s assertions, none of the world leaders at the assembly, except for a brief mention by Turkey last year, have addressed the Kashmir issue, highlighting Pakistan’s diplomatic isolation on this matter.
