Urgent Plea: Gaurav Gogoi Raises Alarm on Devastating Environmental Impact of Infrastructure Projects in Assam
Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi Raises Environmental and Community Concerns Over Assam Infrastructure Projects
Guwahati, Sept 27: Jorhat MP, Gaurav Gogoi, has voiced serious concerns regarding the environmental and societal repercussions of the proposed Digholi Pukhuri-Noonmati flyover in Guwahati and two other pivotal infrastructure projects in Assam. In a letter to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi emphasized that these projects could present substantial challenges to both local ecosystems and communities.
Specifically, Gogoi highlighted the extensive tree felling required for the Digholi Pukhuri-Noonmati flyover in the Chandmari area. He warned that this deforestation could worsen air pollution, lead to unplanned flooding, and diminish the region’s green cover. Gogoi has called for a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and urged the government to consult environmental experts and local communities to ensure the development is both sustainable and responsible.
Additionally, Gogoi pointed out the stalled construction of the Jorhat-Majuli bridge over the Brahmaputra River, attributing delays to contractor disputes and alleged mismanagement. This halt not only affects the progress of the bridge but also poses risks to timely connectivity solutions for the region.
Gogoi also addressed the proposed flyover on AT Road in Jorhat, expressing concerns that its current design and location may displace local shopkeepers and disrupt the local economy. He urged a reevaluation of the project to minimize its impact on businesses and community life.
These critical concerns underscore the need for a balanced approach to infrastructure development, prioritizing environmental sustainability and community welfare. Gogoi’s proactive stance aims to initiate a broader dialogue on responsible development practices in Assam.
