Imphal: Manipur police arrested a 33-year-old man and a minor during an operation in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, seizing 130 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, officials said on Tuesday. The medicines were recovered from an Activa scooter intercepted at Kwakta Terakhongshangbi on Monday.
The scooter was allegedly being driven by Mouluvi Imran, with the minor riding on the pillion. Police recovered 130 bottles of Vincof-Plus cough syrup containing 26 grams of codeine phosphate. Both people were taken to Phougakchao Ikhai Police Station, along with the seized medicines, for further investigation.
According to police, the pair failed to produce valid permits or documents authorising the possession, storage or commercial distribution of the prescription medicines. Imran was subsequently booked under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
Investigators said the seizure was part of an effort to curb the illicit movement of pharmaceutical drugs in the region. Police are also examining the wider supply network to identify the source of the medicines and trace other people allegedly involved in their distribution.
