Bank Strike Called Off After Talks Reach Solution; Customers Relieved
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called off a three-day bank strike scheduled from September 28 to 30, following discussions between the workers’ forum and the Indian Banks Association (IBA) in Delhi. In a statement issued late on September 27, UFBU said banks would operate normally from Monday through Wednesday. The decision followed concerns that a strike during the festive season could disrupt customers, small businesses and other essential banking activities.
UFBU had announced the strike to press for several demands, including a five-day workweek and two weekly holidays. Bank employees had also participated in a nationwide strike on September 11, but their concerns were not addressed. The union subsequently called for the three-day action, raising fears that branches could remain closed for five consecutive days if the strike coincided with the preceding holidays.
The Reserve Bank of India had directed banks to remain open on September 27 to avoid disrupting customers. Banks complied, and representatives of the IBA and UFBU subsequently met in Delhi to seek a solution to the ongoing dispute.
According to sources, the discussions focused on the difference between a five-day workweek and incentives, as well as how to accommodate additional weekly holidays without disrupting public banking services. A committee was formed to examine the issues and determine a way forward, while discussions on incentives were reportedly positive. UFBU subsequently confirmed that the planned strike had been suspended, averting a potentially large-scale banking disruption.
