Tragic Guwahati Landslides: Four Dead, Including 11-Year-Old
Four people, including an 11-year-old girl, were killed in two separate landslides in Guwahati on Tuesday after the city recorded 30.5 mm of rain, authorities said. The incidents occurred in Mathgharia near Noonmati and in Satgaon near Narengi, State Disaster Response Force personnel and fire officials said.
In Satgaon, a large boulder plunged onto a house while the occupants slept, killing 65-year-old P Sumitra, the wife of P Damru (75). Their son P Romanna (45) and P Lakshmi (40) were injured but managed to escape the partially collapsed home. A neighbour, Dabolota Das, who rushed to help, sustained a hand injury and a fracture, according to Moononjan Ramchiary, response team commander of the fire and emergency services.
The more deadly slide struck Mathgharia’s Lakshmi Mandir Path, where a house was buried by soil sliding down from a hillside. Three members of the Rajbongshi family died: 50-year-old Nagen Rajbongshi, his wife Sunu Rajbongshi (38) and their daughter Mina Rajbongshi (11). Their 19-year-old son, Biplab Rajbongshi, escaped the collapse.
The Dispur fire and emergency services station received a distress call at around 10 a.m. and reached the Satgaon area soon after, officials said. Local residents had already carried out rescue efforts by the time emergency teams arrived. Emergency personnel and the State Disaster Response Force were involved in the response at both sites.
“I woke up at around 5:30 p.m. It had been raining, but not very heavily, so I went back to sleep. I was on one bed while my mother, father and sister were on another. The debris fell mostly on their side, while only a portion hit my end,” Biplab told the media, describing how he survived.
The district administration said both affected neighbourhoods lie in earthquake-prone and vulnerable zones where houses on or near slopes are particularly at risk. Officials warned that heavy monsoon rainfall loosens soil and reduces slope stability, increasing the likelihood of landslides in such areas.
