Senior BJP leader and MLA A.L. Hek said on September 1 that the party is confident of winning 25–30 seats in the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections and hopes to form a BJP-led government in the state.
Hek said the party has already identified constituencies where it sees strong prospects and is conducting surveys to find suitable candidates. “We have already identified the potential seats. Twenty-five to 30 seats are very potential for BJP in the upcoming 2028 election,” he said.
He said the BJP sees electoral opportunities across the Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills, while stressing that the final result will also depend on the choice of candidates.
Describing the party’s groundwork, Hek said the BJP’s organisational network now stretches from booth level to constituencies and districts, with strengthening that network the main priority ahead of the polls.
On possible defections, he said the BJP’s doors are open to anyone who wishes to join. “Anybody who wants to join the BJP, the door is very wide open, 24/7 and 365 days,” Hek said.
Addressing party unity and leadership, he denied any leadership dispute within the Meghalaya BJP and said the central leadership would decide who would lead the government if the BJP comes to power. Seniority alone, he added, would not determine the choice; the party will look for a leader capable of uniting members and running a strong administration. Hek also said the party would not oppose a new entrant becoming the chief ministerial face if the central leadership deems them suitable.
On the current political arrangement, Hek ruled out any attempt by the BJP to topple the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government. “There is no question of toppling the government,” he said, adding that the BJP is willing to work with any political party that wants to cooperate. He reiterated that the immediate objective remains to build the party’s organisation across Meghalaya and prepare for the 2028 Assembly polls.
