Shocking Recovery: Mon Police Recover 30 Stolen Two-Wheelers

Mon police announced on August 31 that its Anti‑Vehicle Theft Squad (AVTS) recovered 30 two‑wheelers in Mon town following a three‑week operation that exposed a trans‑border stolen‑vehicle network linking parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The operation began with routine document verifications and led to what the police called “a major inter‑state breakthrough.”

A police press release described the action as “one of Mon Police’s notable proactive operations,” saying investigators initially flagged more than 50 vehicles with doubtful ownership or paperwork. As the probe progressed, over 30 of those machines were traced to theft reports filed in Jorhat, Tinsukia, Charaideo and Sivasagar districts in Assam, and Longding in Arunachal Pradesh. Recovered vehicles were returned to their rightful owners or to the concerned police authorities “as per due legal procedure,” the release said. Some cases had reportedly gone undetected for four to five years.

Investigators say stolen bikes from Assam were being smuggled into Nagaland and sold at comparatively low prices to “unsuspecting and gullible” villagers, sometimes accompanied by random or unrelated identity documents presented as proof of ownership. In several instances buyers reportedly purchased vehicles without properly verifying registration or ownership papers.

The probe also pointed to the involvement of Nagaland‑based middlemen who facilitated disposal of the stolen vehicles. Police said intelligence on suspected Assam‑based thieves has been shared with counterpart agencies there and that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the intermediaries involved.

A Mon police official said the operation is continuing. “We are on the lookout for more. The operation will continue,” the official told reporters. Authorities also said about 20 additional vehicles, including an unspecified number of four‑wheelers, remain in custody pending ownership verification.

In a public advisory, Mon police urged extreme caution when buying second‑hand motorcycles and other vehicles, warning that “a low price should not become a reason to overlook proper documentation.” Buyers were advised to verify registration particulars, ownership papers, chassis and engine numbers, and the theft status of any vehicle through appropriate official channels before completing a purchase.
