Bishkek, Sep 1 (IANS) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a two-nation tour and returned to New Delhi on Tuesday after attending the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
At the summit, held under Kyrgyzstan’s chairmanship, Modi held bilateral discussions on the sidelines with Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon and Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith. He said he had “a great conversation on boosting bilateral linkages between our nations,” referring to his meeting with President Sisoulith.
Following his talks with President Rahmon, Modi expressed India’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Tajikistan across multiple sectors, underscoring New Delhi’s interest in strengthening regional partnerships.
Before the summit proceedings, Modi joined other SCO leaders for a group photograph and engaged briefly with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of the photo-op.
The SCO currently comprises 10 member states — Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan — with Azerbaijan and Armenia listed as observers and a wider set of 15 dialogue partners, including Laos and several Gulf, South Asian and Southeast Asian countries.
On Monday, Modi held additional bilateral meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, furthering diplomatic contacts during the two-day visit.
Modi also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial in Bishkek, met members of the Indian community who welcomed him, and attended the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games, where he conveyed his best wishes to the Indian participants.
The visit followed engagements in Uzbekistan, where Modi met President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at the Shastri Memorial and visited the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies.
