Nepal Flash Floods: Nuwakot Residents Race Back for Essentials
Five days after a flash flood tore through parts of Nuwakot, residents of Bidur-1 are returning to devastated homes to search for essentials and missing relatives, confronting thick layers of mud, scattered debris and widespread destruction. Rescue teams and the Nepal Army remain on the ground, but many survivors say urgent needs for food, drinking water and shelter are not yet being met.
Families have begun clearing mud from houses and salvaging what they can, while a large number have been displaced and moved to safer locations. Bidur-1 Ward Chairman Lenin Ranjit said many people have taken shelter in safer areas; some are renting homes, while others have moved in with relatives after losing property and belongings.
Villages such as Solay and Kopchey remain cut off, local businessman Lal Babu told reporters, and those communities are in immediate need of relief supplies. Nepal Army helicopters have flown in materials, but residents and local leaders say the quantity is insufficient to cover the scale of need across the affected area.
The physical damage is severe: debris litters streets and courtyards, collapsed structures block access, and a foul smell is rising from some wreckage, heightening fears about sanitation and health risks. Near the Army headquarters, photographs and lists of people reported missing or dead have been posted; villagers arrive daily to seek information about loved ones and to report missing persons.
Survivors describe the violence of the flood. Reema Sharma, who watched the water from her window, said the torrent “appeared to rise above a four‑storey building,” a sight so terrifying that many initially believed an earthquake had struck before realizing the movement was caused by floodwaters.
As search, rescue and relief operations continue, Nuwakot’s communities face a long recovery: clearing debris, restoring services and finding or reuniting with missing family members will take time, and many residents remain without adequate supplies or a secure place to stay.
