The Assam unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) announced on Tuesday, September 1, that it will contest the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election and opened a new state headquarters in Guwahati as it seeks to expand its political footprint in the state. The move was announced at an organisational meeting held at the new office attended by around 300 party workers, the party said.
The new headquarters was inaugurated by TMC Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal Nadimul Haque and Assam Pradesh TMC in-charge president and MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed. After the meeting, Ahmed told reporters that party workers were “ready to serve the people” and confirmed TMC’s entry into the bypoll contest.
Ahmed outlined the party’s candidate criteria, saying the nominee “should be highly educated, honest and dedicated, and should be able to speak clearly either in Hindi or English.” He added that applications for the party ticket have been made available at the new office and aspirants have been asked to submit completed forms by September 5.
Framing the contest as a response to perceived governance failures, Ahmed said, “At present, the country and the state are suffering from misgovernance of the BJP. People are looking for a strong alternative against both BJP and Congress, and this time that alternative will be Trinamool.” He also said the party’s principal electoral plank in Assam will focus on the rights and issues of indigenous people.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat became vacant after former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party shortly before the Assam Assembly elections, joined the BJP, contested and won the Dispur Assembly constituency, and became an MLA. TMC’s decision to field a candidate in the bypoll marks a strategic effort to challenge established parties in Assam and build a presence ahead of future elections.
By opening a state headquarters in Guwahati and mobilising local workers, TMC is signalling a concerted push into Assam’s political landscape, emphasising both organisational readiness and a platform centered on indigenous rights and governance alternatives.
