The Doomdooma regional committee of Bir Lachit Sena on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Doomdooma Forest Division in Tinsukia district, urging an immediate halt to alleged illegal sand mining, timber smuggling and unauthorised earth excavation across the Doomdooma area. The group said unchecked extraction and transport of natural resources is causing severe environmental damage and must be stopped at once.
The organisation alleged that indiscriminate river sand extraction is damaging riverine ecosystems and eroding the natural environment, and demanded a stringent crackdown on illegal mining of the region’s riverine sand. They also accused timber transporters of moving wood without valid challans (transport permits) and called for that practice to end.
“The illegal extraction of river sand by destroying nature must be stopped immediately, while timber transportation without valid challans must also be brought to an end,” said regional committee chief secretary Suruj Das and Tinsukia district vice-president Abhishek Bora.
The memorandum further asked for effective protection of forests in reserved areas to safeguard wildlife and maintain ecological balance. It warned that continued degradation of reserved forest land would threaten habitat security and local biodiversity.
Bir Lachit Sena also demanded a stop to unauthorised earth excavation using JCBs, bulldozers and dumpers, saying such activity harms agricultural land and wetlands. The leaders pressed the forest division to conduct regular patrolling and enforcement drives against violations of forest, environmental protection and mining regulations.
Das and Bora said they had given authorities seven days to initiate effective action on the memorandum and urged stringent measures to prevent activities they say are jeopardising the region’s natural resources and ecological security. They warned that failure to act could lead to wider environmental consequences.
