A large female leopard was captured in a cage at No. 1 Nachani Jokai village in Tingkhong on August 29, offering temporary relief to residents who have lived in fear of leopard attacks for nearly one-and-a-half years. The capture came after local efforts to prevent further incidents that have unsettled the community.
According to villagers, leopards have been roaming the village and adjoining areas for around 18 months, killing several head of livestock, including cattle and goats. Repeated attacks have raised serious concerns about the safety of people and animals in the hamlet.
Local youths installed a baited cage on Saturday afternoon in an effort to trap the animal. Villagers say the large female entered the cage and was secured within roughly 30 minutes, prompting immediate notification to Forest Department officials.
Forest Department personnel took custody of the leopard and made arrangements to release it in a forested area, officials and residents reported. The department’s intervention ended the immediate threat posed by that animal, but did not eliminate broader concerns.
Residents said the danger persists: they reported hearing growls from three different leopards at the far end of the village even after the female was captured, creating continued panic. Locals have urged the Forest Department to urgently install three additional cages at strategic locations in the middle and far ends of the village to capture the remaining animals and ensure community safety.
