Shocking Scam: Arunachal Police Arrest 3 Over Rs 17 Crore PMGSY Fraud
Three people have been arrested in Arunachal Pradesh for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 2.40 crore from a contractor who was owed more than Rs 17 crore under a PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana) road project, police said. The accused were identified as Toluk Lombi, Dubi Ete and Rajesh Kumar Singh, Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Nyelam Nega said.
Police said the contractor approached them after the trio demanded Rs 2.40 crore, claiming they could secure release of his long-pending payment of over Rs 17 crore. According to the complaint, the accused told the contractor that Singh had influential contacts at the Centre and could use those connections to get the outstanding bill cleared.
The contractor was handed a letter purportedly confirming approval of the payment. When he visited the office of the chief engineer of the Rural Works Department (RWD) to follow up, officials told him the document was fake, police said. A case was registered at the Naharlagun police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
During the investigation, Singh moved the court seeking cancellation of the FIR; that plea was rejected on August 13, allowing police to continue their probe. A police team later travelled to Guwahati and arrested Singh on August 25; he was remanded to six days of police custody, the SP said. The report did not specify the dates of arrest for the other two accused.
Police are continuing their investigation to establish the sequence of events and determine each accused’s role. Superintendent Nega urged contractors and members of the public to verify any claim by individuals who demand money in exchange for using alleged government connections to secure clearances or release payments.
