Breaking: Far-Right British Provocateur Arrested by US Immigration
US immigration officials arrested British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos on Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said, accusing him of overstaying after entering the United States legally in May 2019 through New York City. An immigration judge issued a final order of removal on July 22 after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for his hearing, a DHS spokesperson wrote in an email.
A DHS statement added, “He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws,” according to the agency. ICE’s online detainee locator did not list where Yiannopoulos is being held but directed family members and legal representatives to the agency’s office in Alexandria, Louisiana, a deportation hub for international flights. It was unclear whether he had secured legal counsel; his representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
Yiannopoulos, a British national, has most recently worked for the rapper Ye (formerly Kanye West), who was scheduled to perform in New Orleans on Friday evening, the report said. He is a long-time champion of conservative causes and has taken provocative public positions criticizing feminism, Islam and immigration policy. Last year he wrote on the social platform X, “Zero immigration for the next 20 years. No ifs, no buts.”
He rose to prominence in the early 2010s as an incendiary writer for the conservative site Breitbart News and resigned in 2017 after a video resurfaced in which he appeared to endorse pedophilia. He later apologized for those remarks and said he had been a victim of sexual assault as a minor.
The arrest comes amid a nationwide increase in detentions tied to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, the article noted. Far-right activist Laura Loomer praised the arrest on X, writing she had first reported that “Milo was in the US illegally where he incited violence against President Trump and worked for Marjorie Traitor Greene.”
In recent years Yiannopoulos remained active in conservative circles: he interned for former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene in 2022, according to the Washington Post, ran a brief 2024 presidential campaign for Ye, and most recently served as Ye’s spokesperson during controversies over the rapper’s own antisemitic remarks, for which Ye later apologized.
