Meghalaya Denies KSU Sit-in at Khyndai Lad After Shillong Violence
The East Khasi Hills district administration on Thursday, August 20, 2026, refused permission for the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to hold a sit-in protest at Khyndai Lad, a day after a KSU rally in Shillong turned violent and disrupted public order. The move follows clashes during the rally on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, that left several people injured and caused damage to vehicles and goods along the route.
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said the decision to deny the sit-in was taken “in view of Wednesday’s incident,” which the administration said had threatened peace and public safety in the city. The order cancels the KSU’s planned demonstration at Khyndai Lad until further notice.
According to reports, the KSU march on August 19 escalated into violence, with multiple people reportedly assaulted and several vehicles-some bearing Assam registration plates-attacked. Witnesses described panic among motorists and pedestrians as masked individuals targeted passing vehicles. Some participants were reportedly heard chanting pro-KSU slogans, though their identities and affiliations have not been independently verified.
Clashes during the rally resulted in injuries to a number of people, while some vehicles were vandalised and at least a few were set ablaze as tensions rose. Government vehicles and those registered in Assam were specifically reported among the targets, prompting heightened concern about the safety of commuters and transport workers on the Assam–Meghalaya route.
The Seven Star Tourist Cab Operators’ Union and other motor vehicle workers’ unions condemned the alleged attacks on drivers, passengers and their vehicles, and urged authorities to ensure the safety of those operating between the two states. The district administration’s refusal to permit the Khyndai Lad sit-in reflects these elevated concerns over maintaining law and order in Shillong.
