SAI Steps Up for Janmoni: Securing Dreams After Historic Gold
Guwahati: Floodwaters that submerged her home on July 19, 2026, have not extinguished 17-year-old Jorhat karateka Janmoni Konwar’s ambitions — the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has stepped in to support her training after she won gold at the 20th All India Independence Cup Karate Championship on August 9, 2026. Janmoni’s participation had been in doubt after the floods hit her No. 2 Sonari Mojiabheti Bhogdoiporiya village, but she prevailed on the mat and drew national attention to her situation.
SAI Regional Centre, Guwahati, executive director D.K. Mittal contacted Janmoni’s family, coach and district sports officials on August 13, 2026 and offered her a place at the SAI Training Centre (STC) in Shillong, where karate training is available. Mittal said, “She was offered a proposal to join SAI Training Centre (STC), Shillong.” Janmoni’s family and coach have accepted the proposal and are preparing to move her to the centre to access formal coaching and facilities.
Under the SAI STC scheme, Janmoni will receive structured training, boarding and lodging, financial assistance, support for competition expenses and insurance coverage — a package intended to remove immediate barriers to her development and competition exposure. The Jorhat district commissioner has also pledged all possible local assistance to the family.
Private donor support helped bridge the gap before SAI’s intervention: PhysicsWallah CEO Alakh Pandey arranged Janmoni’s flight and accommodation in Delhi and has been distributing relief materials in flood-hit areas of Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo since July 30, 2026. Currently undergoing treatment at Jorhat Medical College, Janmoni is expected to join the SAI centre in Shillong soon to continue her training.
Janmoni’s rise is already notable — she won gold at a national championship in 2025 and bronze in 2024. Her coach, Padum Boro, has a track record of spotting talent: he identified Olympian boxer Lovlina Borgohain during an SAI talent hunt in Golaghat in 2013. SAI’s support now gives Janmoni a clearer pathway to pursue higher-level competition and long-term sporting goals.
