Sikkim’s Transformative Initiatives for Viksit Bharat 2047
GANGTOK — Governor Om Prakash Mathur extended warm greetings to the people of Sikkim on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day, urging citizens to honour freedom fighters, the framers of the Constitution and the armed, paramilitary and police personnel who protect the nation. In his message on August 15, 2026, the Governor said Sikkim conveys its “deepest respect and gratitude” from its strategically important Himalayan location.
Mathur said this Independence Day is especially significant as Sikkim also marks 50 years of statehood. He congratulated the people of Sikkim on the Golden Jubilee and expressed best wishes for “the next fifty years of progress, peace and prosperity,” noting that visits by the President and the Prime Minister during the jubilee year highlighted Sikkim’s growing national prominence.
Reflecting on five decades of change, the Governor described Sikkim as a national model of balanced and sustainable development. “What distinguishes our development journey is our steadfast commitment to good governance, environmental stewardship, social justice and people‑centric policymaking,” he said, citing progress across infrastructure, healthcare, education, tourism, agriculture, rural development and social welfare despite geographical and economic constraints.
To guide the next phase of growth, Mathur said the State government has identified five strategic pillars: strengthening productive economic sectors; improving infrastructure and connectivity; investing in human capital; promoting development in harmony with Sikkim’s ecological heritage; and fostering planned, resilient and sustainable urbanisation. He said these priorities will support faster, more inclusive and environmentally sustainable growth toward a “Sunaulo, Samriddhaani Samarth Sikkim.”
Detailing recent initiatives, the Governor noted that on 27 May 2026 Sikkim became a fully literate State under the ULLAS Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, becoming only the fifth State in India to do so. He credited more than 4,000 teachers and volunteers for helping nearly 15,000 adults attain literacy over the past two years.
Mathur also highlighted focused interventions for women’s economic empowerment — including entrepreneurship support, skill development, access to credit and livelihood schemes — and said Sikkim ranks among the States with the lowest rates of crime against women while strengthening legal protections, wage equity measures and maternal and child welfare support.
Appealing directly to young people, the Governor urged them to join the NashaMuktYuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan and work toward a drug‑free society. He closed by calling on citizens to renew a collective pledge to build a greener, healthier, stronger and more prosperous Sikkim where every person can live with dignity, security and opportunity.
