The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Mizoram’s largest students’ organisation, has reaffirmed its opposition to any move to make the full version of Vande Mataram compulsory in the state’s educational institutions, resolving this stance at a meeting on August 14. The MZP said it will oppose compulsion to sing or even listen to the complete song, citing concerns that parts of the hymn carry religious imagery that may conflict with students’ beliefs.
At the August 14 meeting the resolution was passed unanimously. MZP general secretary Lalhmingsanga Chhangte said the organisation would continue to resist any directive that forces students to perform or hear the full stanzas of Vande Mataram. The students’ body stressed that education spaces should prioritise academic development rather than become venues for practices perceived as religious or political imposition.
The MZP pointed out that certain later stanzas of the full song portray the motherland using imagery associated with Hindu deities. It argued that mandatory participation in those portions could be at odds with the Christian faith of many students in Mizoram, where Christianity is the predominant religion.
The students’ organisation also urged that any instruction from the Centre on this matter must recognise the distinct cultural and socio-religious realities of the Northeast rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach nationwide. The MZP said it will continue taking steps to ensure students across Mizoram are not compelled to sing or listen to the full version.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma earlier, in March, had stated the state government’s position: for official or educational purposes the state accepts only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram, saying subsequent stanzas contain religious references. The dispute underscores a broader tension between uniform national directives and regional, faith-based sensitivities affecting students and institutions in the Northeast.
