Tense Assam-Arunachal Border Clashes: Police Fire to Disperse Mob
A fresh clash erupted on Thursday between protesters from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh at the Likabali entry point near Silapathar in Dhemaji district, prompting police from Arunachal Pradesh to fire three rounds in the air to disperse the mob, officials said. The violence occurred as an indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh entered its second day.
The blockade was launched on Wednesday by the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), the apex student body for the Mising community, with support from local social organisations including the Mising Mimag Kebang (MMK) and Takam Mising Mahila Kebang (TMMK). Organisers said the protest was in response to an alleged firing incident earlier in the week in which several indigenous people from Assam were injured.
An official told news agency PTI that while the blockade was underway, “some people from Arunachal Pradesh indulged in stone pelting on protesters from Assam, and some persons sustained minor injuries. This led to a scuffle between the two sides.” He added that Arunachal Pradesh police fired three rounds in the air to control the mob on their side.
Several people from Assam had reportedly been injured on Monday after alleged firing by miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh along the inter-state border amid a dispute over alleged land encroachment. Protesters at the entry points have been stopping vehicles from entering or leaving Arunachal Pradesh, exempting only emergency services and school transport.
The protestors are demanding an early resolution of the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border dispute, action against those allegedly involved in the firing and an end to what they describe as encroachment on Assam land. The situation remains tense as community groups maintain the blockade and local authorities monitor the border crossings. (With agency inputs)
