Sikkim National Law University (SNLU), Gangtok, has been granted recognition by the Bar Council of India (BCI) to confer law degrees and has received fresh approval for its five-year BA LL.B (Hons) integrated programme for the 2026–27 academic year, the university said on Monday, August 10, 2026. The approval, granted under Section 7(1)(i) of the Advocates Act, 1961, allows an intake of two sections of 60 students each (120 seats total) for the programme.
The BCI’s Standing Committee of the Legal Education Committee considered an inspection report at a meeting held on August 1, 2026, before taking the decision, the university said. As part of the approval process, BCI officials conducted an online inspection of SNLU on July 12, 2026. The council’s evaluation of the inspection report and other programme aspects led to formal recognition of the university’s law degree offerings.
The BA LL.B (Hons) programme has also been regularised for the 2025–26 session and formally approved for 2026–27. SNLU’s Centre of Legal Education had applied to the BCI both for recognition under Section 7(1)(i) of the Advocates Act and for fresh permission to run the five‑year honours course for 2026–27.
Established as a statutory university under the Sikkim National Law University Act, 2018, SNLU is currently running its five‑year BA LL.B and LL.M programmes and has commenced a Ph.D. programme this academic session. The university noted that BCI recognition applies only to degrees awarded through the approved programme, intake, campus and mode specified in the council’s communication and remains subject to ongoing compliance with BCI standards.
The university said the BCI decision is significant because it addresses concerns previously raised in the print media about the status of BCI approval and clarifies the institution’s recognition status for students and other stakeholders.
