Manipur Ops Recover 1,422 Arms in Six Months — 85% Looted Recovered
Security forces and law‑enforcement agencies in Manipur have stepped up operations against armed groups, recovering 1,422 arms, 7,010 rounds of ammunition and 1,137 explosives between February 5 and August 11, officials said. The cache was displayed on Wednesday (Aug 12) at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal as part of a Home Department programme reviewing six months of security activity.
Director General of Police Rajiv Singh said the intensified campaign involved 1,570 joint operations during the period under review and led to the arrest of 491 extremists. He told the gathering that since the formation of the present government around 1,450 weapons have been recovered, including nearly 85% of arms looted from police armouries, and that efforts are continuing to trace the remaining weapons.
The state government noted that 46 cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) surrendered in July. Officials also said more than 1,200 firearms — including about 600 weapons taken from government armouries — have been recovered over the last five months.
Singh reiterated the government’s surrender policy, under which individuals who voluntarily hand over looted weapons are exempted from legal action. “Those who surrender looted arms voluntarily will not face cases. We appeal to extremist and insurgent groups to shun violence, lay down arms and return to the mainstream,” he said.
On the anti‑narcotics front, authorities reported intensified action against trafficking networks and illicit cultivation. During the review period, security agencies destroyed 692 acres of poppy cultivation, registered 158 narcotics‑related cases and arrested 223 persons, alongside seizures of large quantities of heroin, brown sugar, opium, ganja and other contraband.
The state government also highlighted peace and reconciliation initiatives by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh since taking office in February, including visits to conflict‑affected districts and meetings with community leaders aimed at rebuilding trust and restoring normalcy.
Officials portrayed the recoveries and arrests as part of a broader push to curb armed violence and drug crime in the strife‑hit state, while stressing that operations to recover remaining looted arms and to sustain peacebuilding efforts are ongoing.
