Manipur CM Orders 15-Day Surrender Deadline for Illegal Arms
Manipur Chief Minister Khemchand Singh on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, announced a 15-day amnesty for people holding illegal weapons to surrender them through their local MLAs or Superintendents of Police, warning that those who fail to comply will face legal action. The announcement was made at the “Display on the Initiatives towards bringing Normalcy in Manipur” held at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal.
Singh said the surrender directive applies to illegal arms held across both the hill and valley areas of the state and stressed that the window is part of stepped-up efforts to restore peace and normalcy. He cautioned that anyone not handing over weapons within the stipulated period would be dealt with under the law.
The chief minister said the prolonged crisis since May 3, 2023, had severely hampered Manipur’s development. He noted that the government, which took office on February 4, 2026, has been conducting peace outreach programmes across districts to create conditions for lasting reconciliation.
Officials displayed arms and ammunition recovered by security forces since February 5, 2026; DGP Mukesh Singh said agencies have seized 1,422 firearms, more than 7,000 rounds of ammunition and 1,137 explosives between February and August 2026. He added that 491 suspected extremists have been arrested during the same period and praised operations by teams led by the DGP alongside the Border Security Force, Assam Rifles (South) and the CRPF.
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam warned organisations and individuals involved in extortion, intimidation or harassment of transporters along national highways that strict action would follow, and said the government is considering invoking the National Security Act against those engaged in such unlawful activities.
Singh also described confidence-building visits, including a stop at Jiribam where he met representatives of the Hmar, Paite, Meitei and Meitei Pangal communities; he said the delegates shared a meal and agreed to work together to bridge differences and promote peace. The government has resumed visits to areas that were previously inaccessible because of the crisis.
At the programme the Department of Information and Public Relations distributed a booklet titled Manipur Marches to Peace and screened a short video highlighting government initiatives. Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Art and Culture Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh, MLAs and senior civil and police officials attended.
