KTR’s Bold Intervention: Telangana Woman Rescued After 25 Days in Oman
A 45-year-old woman from Warangal who says she was confined and harassed for nearly 25 days in Muscat after travelling on a tourist visa to take a promised domestic job has returned safely to India after intervention by BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao (KTR), the party said. According to a BRS press release, the woman, identified as Mohammed Mahamuda, flew to Muscat on July 16 to work as a domestic worker but was allegedly handed over to a sub-agent who seized her passport and phone, confined her to a room and forced her to work against her will.
Mahamuda told investigators she was subjected to harassment and physical assault while held. When she asked to return home, the sub-agent reportedly threatened to implicate her in a theft case and demanded Rs 1.13 lakh — claiming that sum had been spent to bring her to Muscat — before allowing her to leave. With no passport or means of communication, she remained trapped and unable to contact family for almost 25 days, the statement said.
The case came to light after RTV anchor Manoj raised the matter with journalist and Balagam TV CEO Balu Kaithi, who brought it to KTR’s attention and sought urgent help. KTR, the release said, pledged to personally cover the costs of bringing Mahamuda home. Following his instruction, BRS NRI Cell Muscat president Ahmed coordinated with the Indian Embassy and Muscat Police, and Dubai ETCA president Peechara Kiran Kumar also assisted in tracing her location.
After nearly a week of coordinated efforts, Muscat Police located Mahamuda and rescued her from the alleged confinement. The demanded amount was arranged to secure her release and she was taken to the Indian Embassy, where officials kept her under protection for three days while repatriation arrangements were made. Her passport was recovered from the sub-agent on Tuesday, clearing the way for her return, the release said.
Mahamuda reached Hyderabad International Airport and expressed gratitude to KTR for intervening, saying he assured her he would bear the expenses and coordinated with the BRS NRI Cell and Indian authorities. The BRS said KTR personally covered travel and related costs and thanked Ahmed, Peechara Kiran Kumar and journalist Balu Kaithi for their roles in the rescue, while also acknowledging RTV anchor Manoj for bringing the case to light.
KTR warned prospective migrants not to travel to Gulf countries on tourist visas in search of work and urged them to obtain valid company-sponsored employment visas, thoroughly verify recruitment agents and job offers, and confirm visa documents before travelling. The incident underscores the risks faced by vulnerable job seekers who rely on unverified agents and travel on tourist visas, the release added, and highlights the need for greater caution and proper documentation before travelling abroad for work.
