Assam-Arunachal Roads Blocked Indefinitely: Mingmang Badati Firing
Several student and youth organisations on August 12 blocked two key road links in Tinsukia district, severing road connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to protest an alleged firing on Assam villagers at Mingmang Badati in Dhemaji district. The groups said the action was taken to press for accountability and arrests in the incident.
The blockade began at about 5 am at Jagun on the Jagun–Namchik and Jagun–Joyrampur roads. Protesters burned tyres and stopped vehicular movement, saying the shutdown would continue indefinitely until their demands were met.
The Tiwa Matak Peoples’ Council (TMPK), Matak Mahila Karmachari (MMK), Gorkha Students’ Union and Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti jointly launched the agitation and announced the indefinite nature of the protest.
The organisations were demonstrating against Monday’s reported firing at Mingmang Badati village under Gogamukh Revenue Circle in Dhemaji district. They say 11 Assam residents were injured in the incident, three of them critically, although these figures remain as reported by the protesters.
Protesters alleged that armed miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh fired indiscriminately at unarmed Assam villagers and demanded that the Arunachal Pradesh government immediately identify and arrest those involved and hand them over to Assam Police for legal action. The groups warned the blockade would remain until suspects are identified and detained.
The shutdown has disrupted movement on important inter‑state routes, potentially affecting passengers, commercial vehicles and other traffic between the two states.
Assam Police said they are investigating the Mingmang Badati incident and will hold discussions with their Arunachal Pradesh counterparts. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed the DGP, Chief Secretary and other senior officials to look into the matter, describing it as a local land dispute rather than a conflict between the two states.
