Assam Ramps Up Disease Control After Floods – 2 Lakh Treated
The Assam government has intensified healthcare and disease-prevention measures across flood-affected areas to curb the risk of infectious diseases and ensure access to essential medical services, Health Minister Ashok Singhal said on Tuesday. Medical teams and health camps have been deployed statewide, and so far 206,442 people have received free treatment and medicines through 3,103 camps, the minister said.
Singhal told a press conference the Health Department is concentrating on medical care as well as safe drinking water, sanitation, cleanliness, disease surveillance and prevention of vector‑borne diseases in the worst-hit areas. Between August 5 and 9, 11 “Mega Health Camps” were organised in Charaideo and Sivasagar districts, covering five assembly constituencies, with specialist doctors from Dibrugarh and Jorhat medical colleges providing services at the camps.
Health officials have identified 387 pregnant women, 462 mothers, 590 infants under one year and 1,627 children aged one to five in the affected zones. The government is providing regular health monitoring, nutritional assistance and other necessary medical support to these vulnerable groups, Singhal said.
Recognising the heightened risk of diarrhoea and other waterborne illnesses after floods, the state has maintained adequate stocks of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) and zinc tablets. Ensuring safe drinking water remains a major challenge; in coordination with the Public Health Engineering Department, 511 water samples were tested at IDSP (Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme) laboratories to verify potability.
The health department has also stepped up measures to control mosquito breeding and other vector‑borne disease risks expected after flooding. Livestock carcasses are being disposed of following prescribed health and safety protocols to prevent water contamination and minimise the spread of infections. These combined steps aim to prevent secondary outbreaks and protect the most vulnerable communities in Assam’s flood-affected areas.
