Meghalaya will launch a pilot project in Byrnihat to deploy advanced solar-powered air purification machines developed by Mumbai-based Zero Carbon Tech24 Pvt. Ltd., officials said after successful trials by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB). The proposed initiative was reviewed at a meeting on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, where authorities discussed timelines, demonstrations and implementation plans for the industrial town that has repeatedly ranked among India’s most polluted.
MSPCB officials, local village leaders and representatives of Zero Carbon Tech24 attended the July 29 review meeting, during which company experts demonstrated the technology and outlined how the units operate. Officials said the machines run on solar power and are designed to capture and reduce airborne pollutants, offering a supplementary tool to traditional regulatory measures in pollution hotspots like Byrnihat.
Jirang MLA and Cabinet Minister Sosthenes Sohtun said the pilot aims to improve air quality in the industrial area while ensuring that local industries continue to comply strictly with pollution-control norms. “The pilot project is intended to improve air quality in the industrial town,” he said, underscoring the government’s dual focus on remediation and enforcement.
Sohtun also announced that a long-pending proposal for an MSPCB regional office in Byrnihat has been approved. The new office is expected to strengthen pollution monitoring, speed up inspections and enhance enforcement against environmental violations in the area.
The state government said the combined approach-better monitoring plus the introduction of pollution-control technology-is aimed at protecting public health and improving living conditions in Byrnihat. Officials framed the pilot as a targeted step to test technological fixes alongside regulatory oversight before any wider roll-out.
