Imphal-The United Naga Council (UNC) on July 30, 2026 condemned a heavily militarised search-and-combing operation by central security forces in Naga hill areas, calling the drive “unwarranted and vindictive” and blaming it for escalating fear and unrest among local communities. The UNC said personnel of CRPF’s CoBRA units conducted indiscriminate searches across villages in Noney subdivision, during which a Naga Village Guard (NVG), Lanbilung Riamei, was shot dead while on duty and several NVGs and civilians suffered serious bullet injuries. The Council described the killing as a “state‑sponsored murder” and held the forces and government directly responsible.
In a separate allegation, the UNC said Manipur police commandos carried out a midnight raid in Imphal in the wee hours of July 30 that resulted in the arrest and later release of Naga leaders KC Savio (president, Rongmei Naga Council Manipur), Gailanchung Kamei, and Dr Aku Newme (general secretary, RNCM and Joint Tribes Council). The Council called the operation a “Gestapo‑style” crackdown and said those detained were survivors and representatives of victims of the Leilon Vaiphei village massacre who have been seeking justice for slain relatives.
The UNC accused state and central agencies of persecuting victims instead of delivering justice, and alleged a pattern of targeting Naga areas while failing to act against Kuki militants. It said armed Kuki groups operating under a Suspension of Operations (SoO)—notably KNF‑P-have since February 7, 2026 carried out repeated attacks, killings and abductions of Naga civilians, including the execution of six Naga men. “The world knows it. The Government of India knows it. Yet justice remains denied,” the UNC said.
The council warned that continued militarisation by sections of Assam Rifles and CRPF‑CoBRA risks disarming Nagas and undermining their right to self‑defence, while alleged logistical support to SoO groups emboldens further attacks. It urged Naga people to remain calm, vigilant and united, and cautioned that any further provocation would be the responsibility of the Centre and the state government.
