Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday in Washington that he told US President Donald Trump and several US senators that Ukraine urgently needs anti-ballistic missile systems and interceptors to defend against incoming ballistic threats. The comments came during his visit to the US Capitol, where he met with lawmakers to outline Kyiv’s military requirements.
Zelenskiy told reporters that while Ukrainian forces possess drones capable of destroying Iranian- and Russian-built drones, they still lack sufficient weapons to defend against ballistic missiles. “The real problem is anti-ballistic systems and anti-ballistic missiles,” he said after a meeting with senators, adding that he had shared what Ukraine needs.
Anti-ballistic systems and interceptors are weapons and sensors designed to detect, track and destroy incoming ballistic missiles before they reach their targets. Zelenskiy’s appeal in Washington underscores Kyiv’s priority to bolster its air and missile defenses in the face of continued missile strikes and evolving threats.
