Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 28 thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for closely monitoring the state’s flood situation as the Indian Air Force stepped up rescue and relief operations across flood-hit areas of Assam and neighbouring Nagaland. The IAF intensified helicopter sorties while state and central agencies coordinated on-ground relief efforts.
In a post on X, Sarma said the Prime Minister has been taking regular updates from the ground and reiterated that the Assam government is working “on a war footing” to provide relief to affected residents. He added that relief teams have reached every affected village and power supply has been restored in most flood-hit areas.
Sarma said those rescued are being accommodated in relief camps equipped with food and medical facilities, and that dedicated spaces have been arranged for children. He pledged that the government would continue working round the clock and prepare a comprehensive rehabilitation roadmap based on public participation.
The Indian Air Force said its helicopters have rescued 458 stranded people and delivered more than nine tonnes of essential relief supplies across Assam and Nagaland over the past 10 days. The air operations are being carried out in coordination with the Indian Army and civil authorities as part of ongoing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi said he discussed the flood situation with Assam MPs and assured that the Centre is working closely with the state government to support relief and rehabilitation efforts.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 4.45 lakh (about 445,000) people across six districts remain affected. A total of 631 villages are inundated, and 184 relief camps and distribution centres are sheltering nearly 28,700 people as authorities continue rescue and relief operations.
