The Central Government has handed the probe into the July 13, 2026 IED blast in Nagaland’s Chümoukedima district to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), after the attack killed one Assam Rifles jawan and injured four others. The explosion struck Khopanala in Chümoukedima village as a convoy of Assam Rifles vehicles was passing through the area.
Nagaland police said the state government was informed that the Ministry of Home Affairs, in a communication dated July 27, 2026, has entrusted the case registered at Chümoukedima Police Station to the NIA. The Centre said it formed the view that a “scheduled offence” under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 had been committed in the incident.
In its communication, the Centre invoked its powers under Section 6(5) read with Section 8 of the NIA Act and directed the NIA to take over the investigation, citing the gravity of the offence and its implications for national security. “The Central government taking the opinion that a scheduled offence under the National Investigation Agency Act 2008 has been committed in the instant case … has directed the NIA to take over the investigation of the aforesaid case, having regard to the gravity of the offence and its national security implications,” the statement said.
A “scheduled offence” refers to crimes listed in the NIA Act that permit central takeover of probes when matters touch national security or cross state boundaries. The Nagaland government and state police will coordinate with the NIA to complete the legal formalities required to transfer the case.
