The flood situation in Assam improved marginally on Monday, with no fresh fatalities reported in the previous 24 hours, but 4.45 lakh people remain affected across six districts, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said. The authority put the total affected at 4,45,495 in Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metropolitan).
The number of people impacted across the state had been reported at more than 5.24 lakh across five districts until Sunday, the bulletin said. The overall death toll from this year’s deluge remains at 68.
Charaideo continued to be the worst-hit district, with 1,88,404 people still affected. Sivasagar reported 1,44,461 people impacted and Jorhat 74,458, according to ASDMA figures.
Relief operations are ongoing: 90 relief camps are operational, sheltering 28,695 displaced people, and 94 relief distribution centres are functioning to provide aid. The ASDMA warned that the Dhansiri (S) river was flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.
Multiple agencies — including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and civil defence personnel — are carrying out rescue and relief work, with 67 boats deployed in affected areas.
Floodwaters have submerged 37,139.52 hectares of crop land, and 26,679 animals have been washed away, the bulletin said. Damage to houses, roads and other infrastructure has been reported from various parts of the affected districts. PTI.
