World Hepatitis Day is observed on July 28 each year to raise awareness about viral hepatitis, a liver inflammation that can lead to severe liver disease and liver cancer. The World Health Organization has named this year’s theme “Hepatitis: Let’s break it down,” urging the removal of barriers between people and life‑saving services.
The WHO warns that viral hepatitis remains a leading cause of preventable illness and death worldwide. The agency says the necessary tools to eliminate hepatitis already exist: effective vaccines, accurate diagnostics, curative treatments for hepatitis C, and lifelong therapies for hepatitis B.
These interventions can prevent new infections, save lives, and reduce cases of liver cancer and cirrhosis. Yet millions remain undiagnosed, untreated, or unable to access care. Factors cited include stigma, low awareness, gaps in health systems, and persistent inequalities that block timely prevention, testing, and treatment.
The 2026 campaign calls for translating proven science into action through stronger political commitment, sustained investment, and targeted efforts to expand equitable access to prevention, testing, treatment, and care. Closing those gaps, the WHO argues, is essential to stopping needless deaths and lowering the global burden of liver disease.
