The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Assam, arrested Md. Anuwar Hussain from Garukhuti in Morigaon district on July 24, 2026, in connection with an alleged recruitment fraud in which several job aspirants were promised posts in the Assam Rifles in exchange for money. Police say the accused, a resident of Lalipathar village in Nagaon district, is accused of duping candidates by falsely guaranteeing selection.
According to the CID, an FIR was lodged at the CID police station on July 14, 2026, by 25-year-old Montu Thengal of Lakhimpur district along with several other complainants. The victims told investigators that after failing to qualify in the Assam Rifles recruitment process held in Shillong on July 20, 2025, they were introduced to Hussain, who allegedly presented himself as a “Major of Assam Rifles” and claimed he could secure appointments on compassionate grounds through his influence.
Police allege Hussain demanded between Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh from each candidate, assuring them of guaranteed selection. To convince the applicants, he reportedly executed a written agreement before collecting money through Google Pay, bank transfers and cash. Despite receiving payments, the accused allegedly did not secure the promised jobs or return the funds, prompting the victims to approach law enforcement.
CID officials said Hussain will be produced before the competent court and that police custody will be sought for further questioning and investigation. Investigators suspect the same modus operandi may have been used to cheat a larger number of unemployed youths and believe other individuals could be involved in the racket.
The probe is ongoing as authorities work to identify additional victims and collaborators. Police have urged anyone with related information or who believes they were defrauded to come forward to assist the investigation.
