Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike entered its 20th day at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi as opposition leaders, activists and diaspora groups rallied growing support for the protest, turning what began as a solitary fast into a widening campaign of solidarity and political pressure. The Hindu’s live coverage reported an increasing presence of opposition MPs and public figures at the site, and said the protest has drawn sustained attention from civil society across India and abroad.
Wangchuk’s health showed signs of deterioration one day earlier: on the 19th day of his fast he told onlookers, “I’m sorry but I’m unable to speak,” a moment of visible weakening reported by The Guardian. Medical concerns among supporters and visitors to Jantar Mantar have intensified as the fast extends beyond the typical short-term hunger protest period.
Support for Wangchuk has swelled on multiple fronts. The Hindu described growing parliamentary and public solidarity at the protest site. A US-based Hindu rights organisation has publicly endorsed his fast and announced plans for a rally in Washington, signalling diaspora mobilisation in support of his demands, according to The Times of India. Activists inside India have echoed that outreach: a protester fasting for 16 days in Madhya Pradesh told Telegraph India, “Our struggles are same,” linking local fasts with Wangchuk’s campaign.
The convergence of political backing, diasporic demonstrations and parallel fasts nationwide has amplified the spotlight on Wangchuk’s cause and his physical condition. Organisers and supporters say the broadening coalition aims to keep pressure on authorities while drawing public attention to the issues he has raised. As the fast continues, observers say the central question is whether increased visibility and political support will prompt an official response before Wangchuk’s health further declines.
