Tinsukia Floods After Two Days of Rain; Residents Blame Drainage
Continuous rainfall over the past two days has triggered severe artificial flooding across Tinsukia town in Assam, inundating major roads, residential compounds and public spaces and disrupting normal life in several parts of the district. The deluge has left streets waterlogged and commuters stranded, intensifying hardships for residents already familiar with monsoon troubles.
Low-lying localities hit by the flooding include Nakharai, No. 1 Balupara, Barguri, Jariguri, Kakratoli and Hengalguri, where roads, compounds and houses remain submerged. Many residents described the situation as acute, with standing water entering homes and blocking access to essential services.
Several key civic and commercial areas were also severely affected. Rising water levels disrupted movement around Tinsukia Police Station Chariali, the area near the Women’s College, New Pukhuri, Ward No. 4, Kochujan Tea Estate and Bordoloi Nagar, hampering transportation and day-to-day activities for students, workers and shopkeepers.
Locals attributed the recurring “artificial flooding” not to only heavy rain but to inadequate and poor-quality drainage infrastructure. Residents allege that substandard drains and culverts fail to handle even moderate downpours, and say repeated representations and protest programmes demanding lasting fixes have produced little response from the administration and concerned departments.
Community members warned that two days of continuous rain were enough to overwhelm the system, exposing broader deficiencies in the district’s civic infrastructure. Affected residents have urged the state government and district authorities to take both immediate relief measures and long-term steps to strengthen urban drainage and prevent future waterlogging.
