Meghalaya to Ban Uranium Mining: CM Sangma Vows Action

By adminitfy
July 16, 2026 2 Min Read

The Meghalaya government will introduce a formal resolution to oppose and ban uranium mining in the state, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced, reiterating that his administration has never approved uranium extraction. The move, he said, is intended to remove any ambiguity about the government’s long-standing stance against mining of the radioactive metal.

“The Meghalaya Government will pass a resolution to formally oppose and ban uranium mining in Meghalaya,” the Chief Minister said, underlining that the state has consistently maintained its opposition to the activity. The announcement follows renewed media reports and public speculation about potential uranium extraction in the state.

The proposed resolution is being presented as a definitive statement of policy to address years of uncertainty. According to the Chief Minister, it will formally reaffirm Meghalaya’s resistance to uranium projects and aim to halt ongoing debate and rumours that have unsettled communities and policymakers.

Officials say the resolution is driven by persistent public concerns over the environmental and social consequences of uranium mining. Opponents in the state have for decades warned of soil and water contamination, health risks, loss of livelihoods and displacement-issues the government says the measure seeks to confront head-on.

Supporters of the resolution frame it as a commitment to protect Meghalaya’s fragile ecology and the rights of local communities. The state’s porous, biodiversity-rich landscapes and densely settled hills have frequently been cited in arguments against large-scale mineral extraction.

Once adopted, the resolution will serve as the Meghalaya government’s formal policy position opposing uranium mining. The administration says the step is intended to provide clarity for residents, civil society groups and potential investors about the state’s official position.
