Kolkata, July 6, 2026 — Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee led a candlelight procession on Monday from her Kalighat residence toward Hazra in south Kolkata to protest the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district.
The march began outside Banerjee’s house in Kalighat but was halted by police and central forces deployed at the site. Protesters broke through barricades and advanced toward Hazra, creating tense scenes in front of the former chief minister’s residence before security personnel moved to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.
The procession, whose main slogan was “Justice for Baruipur,” included senior women leaders of the Trinamool Congress. Party figures Dola Sen, Pratima Mandal and Aparupa Poddar were seen carrying placards and candles as they joined the demonstration.
A heavy deployment of police and central forces remained in the area throughout the march. After reaching the Hazra crossing and holding protests there for a period, Banerjee returned to her Kalighat house and did not address party workers or the media.
The protest follows a tense situation on July 5, 2026, in Baruipur, where a minor was allegedly raped and murdered. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke with the victim’s family on July 5 and said the police had acted swiftly; three people, including the main accused, were arrested and three others detained. The chief minister pledged that those responsible would face the strictest punishment.
Banerjee spoke to the family by phone on the night of July 5. A Trinamool delegation visited Baruipur on the afternoon of July 6, returned to Kolkata to brief her, and the candlelight march was held thereafter.
The demonstration highlights public anger and the political mobilisation in West Bengal over the Baruipur case, underscoring the intense scrutiny on law enforcement and political leaders as the investigation continues.
