Assam Fake Currency Crackdown: Probe Deepens, Accused Shot
Guwahati, July 4 — The probe into an alleged fake Indian currency racket in Assam intensified on Saturday after one of two accused sustained a bullet injury during a police operation in Guwahati, as investigators stepped up efforts to trace the source of the counterfeit notes and identify other members of the suspected network.
The injured man, identified as Ajay Biswakarma, suffered a bullet wound to his right leg during an operation carried out by Dispur Police in the early hours of Saturday, and was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment, officials said.
Police said Biswakarma and his associate, Debojit Deori, both residents of Deorigaon in Dhemaji district, were arrested after a Maruti Swift Dzire was intercepted near Nagaland House in the Six Mile area under Dispur Police Station jurisdiction on July 2.
According to investigators, the vehicle was stopped following specific intelligence that the duo was transporting counterfeit Indian currency. A police statement said an exchange of fire reportedly took place during the operation, resulting in Biswakarma’s gunshot injury.
A search of the vehicle produced a black backpack containing eight bundles of suspected counterfeit Rs 500 notes. Police said fake currency worth Rs 2.56 lakh was seized along with other incriminating material, and the vehicle allegedly used to carry the notes has been taken into custody.
Investigators suspect the two accused may be linked to a wider fake currency syndicate operating in the region; preliminary interrogation suggested possible past involvement in similar activities, officials said, adding those claims are being verified as part of the ongoing investigation. The injured accused has reportedly alleged that some police personnel were connected to the fake currency trade, but that claim remains unverified and the police have not issued an official response.
Police said efforts are continuing to establish the origin of the counterfeit notes, uncover the supply chain and identify others involved in the racket.
